Where I stand on each issue and how I
have come to take my stand on any particular issue boils down to
Value, Accountability, and Respecting the Process.
As we observed Veteran’s Day, I was
struck by the fact that veterans make sacrifices to ‘protect and
preserve’ the process. The process of how we govern. That process
requires civil dialogue on issues and protection of the process from
abuse. I am disappointed when those who purposefully abuse or ‘short
circuit’ the system are looked at by some as ‘shrewd political
strategists,’ when in fact they do nothing more than insult the
sacrifices made by our veterans to preserve the process.
I am a veteran – I spent my 21st
birthday in Vietnam. Although it would require federal action, I hope
some day to see Election Day and Veterans Day combined into one – a
national holiday allowing all citizens to participate in the process
that our veterans have preserved for all of us to become active
citizens.
